Islanders ring in wet New Year with Resolution Run

'(The wind) was in our face on the way out, and in our face on the way back.'

CHARLOTTETOWN – Some ran five kilometres, and some ran 10. All had fun.
That was the message from Jennifer Hanus, event manager at the Running Room in Charlottetown, after a successful Resolution Run on Sunday morning.
“It was pouring rain, and the wind out of the south… when we ran through Victoria Park it was in our face on the way out and in our face on the way back,” she said. “But everybody made it back and everybody was smiling and had some treats at the end, so it was a pretty good day.”

Runners were all smiles during the Resolution Run in Charlottetown on Sunday, Jan.1.

A total of about 105 people registered for the event, which was double the number from last year’s run, according to Hanus, who estimated that only about half turned out for the event, likely due to the weather. It was snowing when she marked the route at 7 a.m., but had turned to a hard, driving rain by the time the race started at 10 a.m.
Resolution Runs held by The Running Room at locations across the country, some held on New Year’s Day and some on New Year’s Eve. They are popular because they coincide with a time of year when people are thinking positive, Hanus explained.
“I think a lot of people just want to start the New Year off on the right foot, and try to get back in a fitness routine,” she said. “Everyone sets New Year’s resolutions and stuff, and a lot of times they want to start training for a run coming up.”
Registration for this year’s event was split about 50/50 between those running the 5K and those running the 10K. Charlottetown was the only Resolution Run in the Maritimes offering the 10K option on Sunday.
Like the other Resolutions Runs, the emphasis was on fun, not competition. No finishing times were recorded.
“It was a fun run, and all about starting the year off on the right foot,” she said. “It was about getting out there, getting active and having fun.”
