CLARK’S HARBOUR, N.S. – This one was for the dogs.
Almost 40 people showed up on New Year’s Day, many with their canine friends, for the inaugural Dog Jog, an event Talent Wilson held in memory of her friend, and in support of local animals in need.
“It went really well,” said Wilson. “We had 37 people show up, and collected 12 bags of cat/dog food and donations.”
It was only a month ago that she lost Millie, her best friend of more than 14 years, and she found herself struggling to cope with her loss. A week later, another of her friends lost her dog, and the two started talking about what they would like to accomplish in the New Year.

“One of her resolutions was to be more active,” said Wilson. “Walking is one thing Millie and I loved to do together. I felt like I needed to do something, so I said, ‘Why don’t we do a fun run?’”
Holding the event on New Year’s Day also seemed to fit well with the idea, she explained.
“I thought this would help get people out on Jan. 1, start the year off with getting some fresh air, exercise and by helping those who are unable to help themselves, animals,” said Wilson. “I decided to walk in memory of Millie and support those animals who need our help.”
Participants paid $10 to enter the event, with all proceeds going to Animals in Need, an animal shelter in Clark’s Harbour. Donations were also accepted during registration, while dog food, cat food and treats were also welcomed.
A total of about $620 was raised for the cause.
Pleased with the success, Wilson said the first Dog Jog would not be the last.
“I plan on having a run every year from now on that I can,” she said.
