AMHERST, N.S. – Pumpkin pie, cupcakes and hot chocolate will be among the rewards for finishers in the annual Amherst Pumpkin Run, set to take place here on Saturday, Oct. 21.
The event is in its sixth year, and is put on by the Cumberland Y Service Club, in support of the YMCA and the Strong Kids campaign.
“It started out as part of the Cross Border Challenge Series, as an opportunity for a run in late October,” explained Terry MacDonald of the Cumberland Y Service Club. “It is to encourage physical fitness through running for all the family.”

The family-oriented 5K run/walk starts at 6 p.m. at Dickey Park, taking in the park and nearby streets.
“This is a Halloween-themed run,” said MacDonald. “Participants are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes.”
The course is outlined with jack-o-lanterns carved by the children of the YMCA daycare, and the first 150 registrations will received a pumpkin-shaped finisher’s medal.
