SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The memory of a young New Brunswicker remained strong here today, as 175 runners took part in the annual Brent Kelly Memorial 5 Mile Run/Walk.
“I’m over the moon,” said organizer Marta Kelly, aunt of 12-year-old Brent Kelly, who passed away in 2004 from a rare heart disease. “It was a great tribute to Brent’s memory. My participants and volunteers are the best.”
Evan Arsenault of Quispamsis placed first in the run, with a speedy 28:58 time. Bryan Gagner of Mascarene was close behind in second place at 29:03, followed by top female Sacha Hourihan at 31:26.

It was cool and foggy at the Irving Nature Park for the event this morning, which suited Hourihan well once she got moving.
“I like this race because it is so peaceful and beautiful through the trails and it’s a nice break from road racing,” she said. “I used the race as part of my long run and had already ran the five-mile course that morning before the race, so I am happy with placing third overall and as the first woman.”
Alex Coffin was the third place male finisher at 32:34, while Emma Jarvis of Oromocto was the second female at 32:58 and Brenda Guitard was third at 37:53.
