MIRAMICHI, N.B. – Another winter Sunday, another 5K race in Miramichi, N.B.
This time the Miramichi River Runners will be celebrating one of their gone but not forgotten members, as they run the David Morris Memorial 5K on Sunday, Feb. 5.
“David Morris started running with the club in March of 1985, and stayed up to his death in 2005,” explained past president Brian Richard. “He was a well respected lawyer and was the owner of the local Opera House, a night club in the former town of Newcastle on the Miramichi.”
Last year’s February run in Miramichi drew 46 runners, with Greg Sawyer of Edmundston, N.B. and Meghan Duffy, all the way from North Bay, Ont., leading their respective fields.
This year’s turnout, as is always the case at this time of year, will depend on conditions.
“Again our numbers are at the mercy of Mother Nature, who in January gave us two snowstorms during the Rocky Blackmore and Brian Richard 5K races,” said Richard.
Whatever they get dealt in the way of weather, the Miramichi runners have proven one thing to be certain. The race will be on.
Registration takes place between 9-10 a.m. at the Linden Recreation Centre, with the race starting at 10 a.m. at the corner of Newcastle Boulevard and Beaverbrook Road.

Greg Sawyer of Edmundston, N.B. was the first across the finish line in last year's David Morris Memorial 5K.
