MONCTON, N.B. – It was her first runway run, but Michaela Kearns said it will not be her last.
The Greater Moncton Romeo LeBlanc International Airport hosted the annual YQM Runway Run on Sunday, Sept. 10, and 174 of the 186 registrants turned out for the 5K race.
“I had a pretty good run, and it was a beautiful morning for a race,” said Kearns, who finished as the top female with a time of 22:26. “It was a nice, flat course and I got a new personal best for my 5K distance.”
The Lower Coverdale runner praised the event for its organization, and for its support of a valuable cause in the United Way of Greater Moncton.

Finishing first overall was Francois Richard of Dieppe, with a time of 17:15, followed by Jason St-Onge at 19:23.
St-Onge has been training for a triathlon, with focus on his biking, and said he has not been running much this summer.
“I like to try something different, and it’s not every day you can race on a tarmac,” he said. “I was trying for a sub-20 because I know I can, and was not quite there all week, but was happy at the finish.
I was surprised to see a dip in the course,” he added, with a laugh. “I thought a tarmac was flat.”
Finishing in third place was Brian Robertson at the 19:50 mark. In second place among females was Anna Lee LeBlanc at 23:41, followed by Laurie Lynch at 24:10.

“It went great,” said Charline Ouellet, marketing coordinator at the airport. “It was a great turnout, and the sky was clear.”
Ouellet estimated about $8,500 raised for the United Way.
The winner of the trip for two from event sponsor Porter Airlines was Sandra Aburto.
